A sand candle is a refillable candle made from granular, plant-based wax. You pour the wax into a glass, bowl or mug you already own, press in a cotton wick and light it. When the wick burns down, you top it up and light it again, so there's no jar to throw away.
Yes. Sand candles avoid the most common candle risks. Only the wax right around the wick melts, so there's no large pool of hot liquid wax, and you refill the vessel before it burns low, so it never overheats at the bottom. Candella uses cotton wicks and wax with no paraffin. As with any candle, trim the wick to ¼ inch and never leave it burning unattended.
The Classic 350g comes with 8 cotton wicks (15 cm each) for 80+ hours of total burn time. The Discovery 100g comes with 6 shorter wicks (7.5 cm each) for 15+ hours of burn time.
Any heat-resistant, non-flammable vessel at least 3 inches (7.5 cm) wide works, so the flame stays away from the edges. Wide glassware, ceramic bowls and concrete vessels are ideal. Avoid thin glass, plastic and porous materials.
When the wick burns down, lift off the thin layer of hardened wax and the used wick. Both are biodegradable, so they can go in your compost. Then top up the vessel with fresh sand wax, press in a new wick and light it again.
