Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: Choose Your Glass Vessel

Select a clear container with a wide opening — wider vessels allow for safer burning, easier styling, and a more dramatic floating effect. Great options include a glass hurricane vase, wide cylinder, clear bowl, or large goblet. Transparent glass showcases the flowers, water, and candlelight beautifully.

Step 2: Prepare Your Flowers

Fresh flowers: Trim stems so they fit neatly inside the vessel and stay submerged in water.
Dried flowers: Use a glue gun to attach them to the inside wall of the vessel — dried florals float and need anchoring. This creates a layered botanical look while keeping everything in place.

Step 3: Add Decorative Fillers (Optional)

Fillers instantly elevate the arrangement while hiding glue points or stems. Try clear crystals, pearls, river stones, shells, glass gems, or gold beads — they catch the candlelight beautifully once lit.

Step 4: Fill With Water

Pour clean water into the vessel to your desired height. Make sure flowers are positioned nicely and the arrangement feels balanced before moving to the next step.

Step 5: Pour the Sand Candle Wax

Gently pour Candella sand candle wax onto the water’s surface. The wax floats naturally, forming a candle layer on top. Insert the wick into the wax layer and ensure it stands upright and centred.

Not sure which wax to use? The Discovery Scent Bundle includes Lavender Fog and three other curated scents — ideal for creating a fragrant centrepiece.

Step 6: Trim the Wick and Light

Trim the wick to approximately ¼ inch above the wax surface before lighting. This creates a cleaner, steadier flame and a safer burn. → See our full wick placement guide

Tips for Best Results

  • Large flowers floating? Add extra glue to the stem base for weight and stability
  • Using dried flowers? Choose sturdy varieties like eucalyptus, ruscus, or preserved foliage
  • Want extra drama? Run multiple centrepieces down a long reception table
  • Hosting outdoors? Use taller vessels to shield the flame from breeze
  • Want colour? Match tinted florals or fillers to your event palette

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can sand candle wax really float on water?
Yes. Sand candle wax granules are less dense than water, so they float naturally on the surface. This is what makes the floating centrepiece effect possible — no special equipment needed.
How long will a floating sand candle centrepiece burn?
Burn time depends on how much wax you use and the vessel size. A standard pour from a Discovery 100g bag burns approximately 15 hours, and Classic for about 80+ hours.
Is it safe to burn a candle over water?
Yes — the water actually acts as a heat buffer, keeping the vessel cooler than a standard jar candle. Follow standard candle safety: never leave unattended, keep away from drafts, and use a stable surface.
