Sand candles are refillable candles made from granulated wax that pours into any heat-safe vessel — burning approximately 4 grams of wax per hour, for up to 80 hours per 350g bag. Below are the five questions we hear most from first-time buyers, answered with real-world burn data, not marketing copy.
1. How Long Do Sand Candles Actually Burn?
Candella sand candles burn up to 15 hours (Discovery 100g) or up to 80 hours (Classic 350g) — and because the vessel is reusable, it never expires.
Sand wax burns at a consistent rate of approximately 4 grams per hour. Only the granules immediately surrounding the wick are consumed — the rest stays intact in the vessel, ready for a fresh wick and another full burn.
So the better question isn't just burn time per fill — it's how many burns you get from one bag. The answer: many. Top up the vessel, reset the wick, and you're back to a full candle experience in under a minute.
Actual burn time varies based on vessel size, fill height, wick placement, and room conditions. Our quoted times are based on real-world use, not ideal lab conditions.

2. What Do You Do When the Wick Burns Down?
Remove the spent wick, smooth the surface of the granules, insert a fresh wick — and your candle is ready to burn again. No scraping, no soaking, no wasted wax.
Because sand wax is loose rather than solid, there's no hardened layer to chip out or reheat. The spent wick and any residue around it can be composted or disposed of in a biodegradable bin — both are made from vegan, plant-based ingredients.
The surrounding granules stay fully usable. This is what makes sand candles genuinely refillable, not just theoretically.

3. How Are Sand Candles Different From Traditional Candles?
The biggest difference: sand candles aren't fixed to a container. You pour the wax into any vessel you choose and create a custom candle in under a minute.
Traditional candles come pre-formed — the look, size, and container are already decided. When the candle is done, the container usually is too.
Sand candles work the other way around. The wax is the product. You choose the vessel — a ceramic dish, a vintage bowl, a glass cylinder from your event venue — and pour accordingly. The same bag of wax can create completely different looks across different spaces.
| Sand Candles | Traditional Candles | |
|---|---|---|
| Vessel | Your choice | Fixed |
| Refillable | ✅ Yes | ❌ No |
| Customizable scent | ✅ Yes | Limited |
| Waste | Minimal | Container + wax |
| Burn time per bag | Up to 80 hrs | Single use |
Sand candles aren't designed for convenience — they're designed for intention.
4. What Makes Sand Candles More Sustainable?
Sand candles eliminate the single-use container — which is where most of a traditional candle's waste actually comes from.
Research shows only around 8% of candle containers get recycled. The other 92% — most of them glass — end up in landfill, often with residual wax still inside that makes recycling even less likely.
With Candella, there's no container included because you already have one. The vessels you love stay in your home. The wax is reused until the bag is empty. When it is, you replace the wax — not the whole candle.
Candella sand wax is made with RSPO-certified palm wax, meaning the sourcing meets certified responsible standards. It's not a perfect product — but it's a thoughtfully made one.
5. Can You Add Scent to an Unscented Sand Candle?
Yes — add a few drops of essential oil directly around the wick area before lighting. Start with 5 drops and adjust to your preference.
Because the granules sit loosely in the vessel, the oil distributes naturally through the wax as the candle warms. You control the strength, the scent, and the mood entirely.
A few things worth knowing: essential oils give a softer, more diffuse scent throw. For stronger fragrance, look for candle-specific fragrance oils. Always add oil before lighting — not while the candle is burning.
This is why we offer the unscented sand candle — it's one of the most personal things you can do with a candle.
Sand candle facts at a glance
- Sand wax burns at approximately 4 grams per hour — only the granules around the wick are consumed, the rest stays usable for the next burn.
- One 350g bag of Candella wax delivers up to 80 hours of total burn time — equivalent to 3-4 traditional 8oz jar candles.
- Cotton wicks burn approximately 25% cooler than zinc- or lead-core wicks, per the National Candle Association.
- Only ~8% of candle containers are recycled — the other 92% end up in landfill, often with residual wax inside.
- All Candella wax is RSPO-certified (Roundtable on Sustainable Palm Oil) and meets ASTM F2417, the international fire safety standard for candles.
"When customers ask 'how long does it actually burn?' or 'is the wax safe?' — those aren't sales objections. They're real questions. We built Candella for people who want honest answers, not pretty marketing."
