Myth 1: “Sand Candles Automatically Extinguish If They Tip Over”
False — and this assumption is genuinely dangerous.
Because the wax is loose, some people assume the granules will smother a flame if the candle tips. That’s not reliable and shouldn’t be counted on.
While loose wax may sometimes reduce flame spread compared to liquid wax pooling from a jar candle, no candle is self-extinguishing. Sand candles still involve an open flame and require the same care as any other candle: stable surface, heat-safe vessel, away from children, pets, and drafts — and never left unattended.

Myth 2: “Sand Candles Are Made of Actual Sand”
False — the name refers to the texture, not the material.
This is the most common misconception. Sand candles contain no beach sand or decorative sand. They’re made from granulated candle wax — typically plant-based — that’s been processed into a fine, pourable texture resembling sand.
That loose format is what makes them refillable: you pour the wax into any vessel, burn it, reset the surface, and reuse the remaining granules. The “sand” is purely descriptive.

Myth 3: “Sand Candles Are Single-Use”
False — reusability is the entire point.
This myth comes from comparing sand candles to traditional jar candles, where once the wax is gone, the product is done. Sand candles work completely differently.
Only the wax immediately surrounding the wick is consumed during a burn. The remaining granules stay intact in the vessel, ready to be reset with a fresh wick and burned again. One bag of Candella wax can fuel dozens of burns across multiple vessels.
That refillable design is the main reason people switch — and stay switched.
Myth 4: “You Can Only Use Them One Way”
False — flexibility is the whole appeal.
Traditional candles arrive pre-poured into one fixed container. Sand candles let you choose the vessel entirely. That means the same bag of wax can look completely different depending on where you use it:
- A ceramic bowl for the dining table
- A vintage teacup for a bedroom shelf
- A glass cylinder for a wedding centrepiece
- A shell or seasonal container for holiday décor
- Any heat-safe vessel you already own
You can refresh the look anytime without buying a new candle. For many people, sand candles stop feeling like a consumable and start feeling like part of the décor itself.
Myth 5: “Sand Candles Create More Waste”
False — over time, they create significantly less.
This myth usually comes from seeing loose granules and assuming they’re messy or disposable. In reality, the opposite is true.
Research shows only around 8% of candle containers get recycled — the other 92% go to landfill, often with residual wax still inside. With sand candles, there’s no container to throw away. You reuse the same vessel, replace only the wax and wick, and spilled granules can be gathered and reused rather than discarded.
Candella wax is also made with RSPO-certified palm wax — responsibly sourced, plant-based, and free from petroleum byproducts.

So Why Are Sand Candles Growing So Fast?
Once the myths are cleared up, the appeal is straightforward:
- Refillable — not disposable
- Customizable to any vessel or aesthetic
- Lower-waste over time vs. jar candles
- Clean-burning RSPO-certified palm wax
- Flexible for home décor, events, and gifting
They’re not trying to replace every candle format. They’re a different one — and for many people, a better fit.
