Sand wax — also sold as pearled wax, bead wax, candle sand, or wax pellets — is loose, granular candle wax you pour into any heat-safe vessel, add a wick, and light. When it's spent, you pour it out and refill. It isn't actually sand; the name just describes the texture. Candella's version is RSPO-certified, plant-based palm wax, which makes it refillable, low-waste, and clean-burning.
If you've been shopping for these candles, you've probably noticed they go by a dozen different names, which makes it hard to tell whether you're comparing the same thing. You mostly are. Here's a plain-English guide to what sand wax is, every name it hides behind, what it's made of, and the lookalike products that aren't sand candles at all.

What is sand wax?
Sand wax is candle wax formed into small, loose granules or beads rather than poured into a solid block. You use it by pouring the granules into a container, settling a wick in the middle, and lighting it like any candle. Because the wax never sets into a fixed block bonded to the glass, you can pour out what's left when you're done and refill the same vessel again and again. That refillable, low-waste quality is the whole point — and it's why the category has taken off with people who want a candle habit with far less thrown away.
Why does it have so many names?
There's no single agreed term yet, so different makers and marketplaces each coined their own. They almost all describe the same loose, granular wax:
| You'll see it called | What it means |
|---|---|
| Sand candle / sand wax | The most common name; “sand” refers to the loose texture |
| Pearled wax / pearl wax | Emphasises the small bead or pearl shape of the granules |
| Bead wax / candle beads | Same idea — the wax comes as beads |
| Candle sand / powder candle | Marketplace terms for the granular wax |
| Wax pellets / wax granules | Describes the physical form |
| Sand painting / sand art candle | Usually colored craft kits for layering patterns |
| Refillable / reusable candle | Describes the benefit rather than the wax |
The practical lesson: the name tells you almost nothing about quality. What matters is what the wax is made of — which many cheap listings won't tell you.
Is it actually made of sand?
No. Despite the name, there's no sand in a sand candle. “Sand” is just the closest everyday word for the loose, pourable, grainy texture. It's wax the whole way through — the granules melt and burn exactly like the wax in any candle.
What is sand wax made of?
This is the question that actually matters, because the wax determines how cleanly it burns. Sand waxes are usually plant-based — soy, coconut, or palm. Candella's is RSPO-certified palm wax: a renewable, plant-derived wax, not paraffin (a petroleum by-product). Cheaper mystery kits often don't disclose the wax at all, which is worth being cautious about. If a listing won't name the wax, treat that as a red flag — we go deeper in our guide to whether sand candles are toxic.
How sand wax works
Using it takes about a minute:
- Pour the granules into any clean, heat-safe vessel — glass, ceramic, or metal.
- Settle a cotton wick into the centre so it stands upright.
- Top up and level the granules around the wick, then light it.
- When the wax is spent, let it cool, pour out the leftover granules, and refill.
Because you supply the vessel, you control the entire look — and the same container works for a different scent next month.
Sand wax vs regular candle wax
The wax itself can be the same family (both are often plant-based), but the format is the difference. A regular candle is poured solid into one jar you use once. Sand wax stays loose, so it refills instead of being discarded, avoids the wasteful kind of tunneling, and lets you reuse any vessel you like. There are trade-offs too — a scented sand wax has a gentler scent throw than a solid poured candle, because the air gaps between the granules mean less wax sits in the melt pool at once. We compare them fully in sand candle vs regular candle.
What is NOT a sand candle
A few popular products share the “sand” name but are something else entirely:
- “Sand & Fog” is a jar-candle brand, typically a paraffin-and-palm blend — a traditional poured candle, not loose refillable wax.
- Yankee “Pink Sands” and “Sun & Sand” are scent names for regular jar candles, not sand candles.
- “Sand art” candle kits are craft sets for layering colored granules into patterns — fun, but often unbranded imports with undisclosed wax.
If you want the refillable, pour-and-reuse candle, look for “sand candle,” “sand wax,” or “refillable candle wax” — and check that the maker names the wax.
Scented, unscented, and making it your own
Sand wax comes scented or unscented. Scented granules give a soft, ambient fragrance — gentler than a heavily fragranced jar candle, which many people prefer for everyday rooms. Unscented wax gives you a clean, neutral burn, or a blank base you can scent yourself by adding your own fragrance oil. That customization is one of the quiet advantages of the format: you're not limited to a maker's shelf of scents. Not sure where to start? Our scent quiz points you to a match in under a minute.
Is sand wax any good?
It depends entirely on the wax and wick, not the name on the bag. A well-made, plant-based sand wax with a proper cotton wick burns cleanly, refills endlessly, and cuts waste. A cheap mystery kit may burn poorly and tells you nothing about what's in it. For more on what separates the two, see our first-timer FAQ.

Frequently asked questions
Is pearled wax the same as sand wax?
Yes. Pearled wax, sand wax, bead wax, and candle sand are all names for the same loose, granular, refillable candle wax.
Is a sand candle actually made of sand?
No. The name describes the grainy, pourable texture. It's wax throughout — there's no sand in it.
What is sand wax made of?
Usually a plant-based wax like soy, coconut, or palm. Candella's is RSPO-certified, plant-based palm wax. Cheap kits often don't disclose the wax.
Is “Sand & Fog” a sand candle?
No. Sand & Fog is a poured jar-candle brand, usually a paraffin-and-palm blend — not loose, refillable sand wax.
How do you use sand wax?
Pour the granules into a heat-safe vessel, add a cotton wick, and light it. When it's spent, pour out the leftover wax and refill.
Can you add scent to unscented pearled wax?
Yes. Add a few drops of your own fragrance or essential oil to unscented granules for a scent that's entirely yours.
